MJO works intensively with Christina and Risky on the lunge line.

The frequent transitions between flexion, steps, halts, rein-back, mobilisation and lateralisation help to build and strengthen the muscles while improving flexibility.

These exercises require a high degree of sensitivity and awareness from both the rider and the horse.

The frequent transitions between mobilisation and lateralisation particularly strengthen the horse’s hindquarters and, in particular, the lumbar region.

Flexions performed while standing still help the horse to engage and collect without shortening the topline, while keeping the poll as the highest point.

Recording from June 26, 2025

Manuel works with Christina on improving activity and the horse’s ability to collect by repeatedly asking for more vibration and insisting on smooth, flowing transitions.

The extensive work in travers on both reins helps challenge and strengthen the weaker hind leg.

Especially when improving the diagonal mechanics, a slight travers positioning can help keep the horse together, allowing for better flexion of the knee.

Piaffe and passage, in particular, require a high degree of activity from the diagonal pairs of legs, as they are fundamentally diagonal movements. Manuel often says, “The horse has to jump on the diagonal,” meaning that the horse must push itself into the movement through the diagonal pair of legs. This ensures that both piaffe and passage develop from genuine weight carrying and engagement of the hindquarters.

Because travers is itself a diagonal lateral movement, it can be used with an advanced horse in piaffe and passage to further strengthen the diagonal foot sequence and increase weight carrying capacity.

Risky finds the left side more difficult than the right when performing passage in travers. This indicates that Christina needs to increase the activity of the left diagonal pair. Even during the tapping work, Manuel wants Christina to keep Risky in the travers position and only allow him to gradually straighten once he is truly moving correctly on the diagonal. During the tapping exercises, Manuel even taps slightly on the forehand on the right rein to encourage greater activity in the forehand during the piaffe.

Another high-level lesson. The goal here is to improve the horse’s engagement of its hindquarters. Since the pelvis and poll are closely connected, activating and responsiveness of the pelvis requires a supple poll. This lesson clearly demonstrates how to effectively develop this connection, progressing from basic exercises to advanced movements. The horse’s powerfully engaged hindquarters at the end of the lesson prove the effectiveness of the training.

This lesson showcases advanced gymnastic exercises for the hindquarters. Half-pass and pirouettes, performed with varying approaches, activate and strengthen the horse’s knee and pelvis. It takes many years of intensive study and development to train a horse to this level. Even if the sequences appear simple, the true art, and therefore the benefit for the horse, lies in the details, which the rider only gradually grasps. Not all half-passes are created equal, and not all pirouettes are the same. The exercise itself is not the key to the benefit; it is the HOW it is executed that matters.

AHZ

If one wants to seriously evaluate and classify a training method and riding philosophy in terms of the horse’s welfare, one must follow its development. This video offers an excellent opportunity to do so, as it shows the current training level of a formerly unrideable horse after eight years of vertikal progress. A horse that stands and moves like this at 17 years old cannot be incorrectly trained. Despite all the criticism.

Recording from 06/02/2025

At the beginning of the session, Christina Wunderlich rides straight ahead while focusing on developing the flexion of Risky Business. She initially maintains flexion to the left for a while, and then to the right. While riding straight, the inside leg ensures that Risky Business’s hindquarters do not step inward.

As the session progresses, rein changes are performed across the diagonal in half-pass. The half-pass here should be understood as leg-yield with positioning in the direction of movement, without creating bend. Along the track, Christina first rides half-pass on the right rein, maintaining the flexion but in a slightly less pronounced form. Manuel emphasizes that the flexion must not be lost under any circumstances and that Risky should not be taken out of position.

After the half-pass rounds, the work continues with rein-back in flexion, followed by trot transitions and shoulder-in in flexion. This is followed again by rein changes across the diagonal in half-pass, and then straight riding in flexion. Then shoulder-in is ridden on the other side, again in flexion, followed by half-pass across the diagonal and once more straight riding in flexion.

The sequence is repeated in varying combinations: always flexion to one side and then the other, interrupted by rein changes across the diagonal in half-pass or half-pass along the entire long side with the horse’s head toward the wall. The body remains straight, and the flexion should be limited to the poll. At the end of the trot work, Risky should be ridden completely straight, without flexion, before a walk break follows.

Throughout, Manuel repeatedly explains that Christina must ensure that Risky Business’s neck does not collapse or drop downward. This is supported by the leg. After the break, the work resumes with rein-back in flexion, walk, transition to canter, and straight riding in canter with inside flexion, with the inside leg always remaining at the girth.

The canter work includes half-pass along the track, rein changes across the diagonal, counter-canter along the track with a straight horse and flexion first to the outside, then to the inside. Flying changes are performed while maintaining inside flexion. This is followed by half-pass along the track, maintaining flexion, diagonal half-pass, and again straight riding in flexion.

The exercise continues with changes of flexion during the canter work: first changing the flexion to the right while Risky Business remains in left-lead canter, then maintaining right flexion and changing to right-lead canter, followed by half-pass along the track, a volte, and counter-canter with flexion to the outside. The body remains straight while flexion and positioning are maintained precisely.

Further changes of flexion in canter are performed throughout the exercise, sometimes within the same lead, sometimes during transitions, always with the goal of improving the Hanoverian’s flexibility. At the end, there is a transition to passage-like trot, where the inside leg is used to encourage Risky to step under the center of gravity with the inside hind leg. The trot should then gain more impulsion until a slight increase in activity is achieved.

At the end of the session, Manuel asks whether Christina understood his objective: it is not about placing the horse at a specific point, but about developing flexibility. He explains the difference between positioning and bend, emphasizing that this exercise is exclusively about positioning—that is, flexion at the poll.
