Neapolitano Bonavoja (15) – Tragkraft & Flexibilität mit Christina Wunderlich (DE/EN)

26.12.2022

Christina Wunderlich continues to develop Neapolitano in MJO’s absence.

In the piaffe at the beginning you can see a very high level of mouth activity, which does not have to be a bad thing and in this case is not. Neapolitano thus shows that he is not only physically but also mentally strongly challenged. This is also shown in the tendencies to levade, into which the Lipizzaner wants to take refuge, which is why Christina allows an anticipatory tendency in the piaffe here, in order to not let the stallion get behind the aids. You can see the fine rein aids very well here – Neapolitano is not brought into the piaffe by the hand, but by seat and thigh aids.

In the canter on the volte Christina rides the stallion straight at first, i.e. without lateral gait and with almost no position at all. Then she rides him in a counter shoulder walk to mobilise the outer hind leg and get it under the body, which the stallion obviously finds difficult. The topic of load bearing is a common theme in the stallion’s training. Even if there is still potential, an improvement can already be seen – step by step, every little progress is worked out.

The supply and interception on the diagonal promotes the mobility of the pelvis, serves to check the aids and also to check the work itself, because here it shows whether the horse is able to open the gait out of the carrying power without falling on the forehand. Furthermore, opening the gait helps horses that tend to get behind the aids to get them back into the forehand.

Since Neapolitano’s left knee is weaker, Christina works the stallion intensively in the right canter, both right hand in counter shoulder walk and left hand in shoulder walk, in order to set a training stimulus and gradually improve this „weak point“.

In the following trot work you can see that the stallion begins to spring and he now seems lighter. At the end the canter changes follow, which do not always work yet, but on the whole are getting better and better, as are the pirouettes.

General information about Neapolitano Bonavoja 95

Neapolitano came to his previous owner at a young age as an unrideable rehabilitation horse. Thanks to the vertical work and the help of MJO, she was able to rehabilitate the stallion and train him in the best possible way. However, even the best vertical trainers, among whom we count Alexandra Michaela Kuhes, may not be able to recognise a horse’s asymmetries 100% and act on them accordingly. Especially with such a strong and massive horse as Neapolitano, who already has many construction sites due to his (disadvantageous) build alone, this can happen faster than, for example, with a better built and more elastic horse.
